Even if you don’t know a ton about vehicles, you probably have a basic idea of how things in your RAM truck work, like the engine and brakes. There’s another major component, however, that you should be familiar with: the transmission. This is because it is one of the most important RAM parts.

What Does the Transmission Do?

The transmission plays a crucial role in the operation of a vehicle. Its job is to take the power created by the engine and transmit it to the wheels. In addition to delivering that power, it sends it where it needs to go and when it needs to get there. There are two main types of transmissions: automatic and manual.

Automatic Transmissions

With an automatic transmission, your car changes speeds for you. Unlike a manual, this type of transmission uses a torque converter that makes the right gear changes at the right times.

Manual Transmissions

With a manual transmission, it’s up to the drive to change gears. To do this, you would utilize the stick shift and clutch pedal. While they used to be common, most vehicles don’t come with manual transmissions anymore.

Is One Type of Transmission Better?

These days – and depending on which kinds of cars you’re interested in – you may not have a choice of transmission. Most come with automatics, which can make driving easier, as you don’t have to worry about shifting gears. Some sports cars, however, offer manual transmissions, and if you like having total control over your speeds, these may be right for you.
