Three trucks were chosen by Motor Trend to be put through rigorous tests so their editors could gather necessary information and then vote on which truck performs the best. The tests took place during a 260-mile drive through eastern California and western Arizona. Judges paid special attention to the following:
- Standard testing – without load – which includes 0-60 miles per hour and ¼-mile acceleration, 60-0 miles per hour braking and maximum lateral grip.
- Limit Handling – also without load – closed-course cornering, braking and acceleration
- Tow testing with a 7,000 lbs trailer
- Payload testing with 1,000 lbs
- Fuel economy testing
